Improperly installed cinder block piers

Cinder blocks are not the best material to use for foundation piers, but when they are installed incorrectly you are asking for dramatic failure.  Cinder blocks are engineered to be used standing up (holes on top) and as part of a wall of blocks where the load is evenly distributed.  A single unattached cinder block may not perform as intended.  A cinder block placed on its side may disintegrate suddenly, especially if the load is uneven or shifting.  The pictured cinder blocks are not only incorrectly installed, they also have been undermined by water penetration.
